Congregation Correspondence and other material 1917-1970.

This series comprises correspondence generated or retained by the Rev. Fredrik A. Schiotz, president of The American Lutheran Church (TALC). This correspondence pertains to congregations of TALC as well as several of its predecessors. Records date from 1917-1970 and are primarily handwritten and typewritten business correspondence. Other records types are in this series as a result of being reference material included with specific correspondence. These records types include anniversary booklets, resolutions, congregation constitution and bylaws, newspaper clippings, news releases, and promotional pamphlets and brochures. There is correspondence that predates Pastor Schiotz's tenure as TALC president. It appears that in 1954 when he became president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), a predecessor of TALC, he inherited congregation correspondence files from his ELC predecessor, the Rev. Johan A. Aasgaard. During his tenure as TALC president, Pastor Schiotz maintained these files as well as added new ones. Correspondents included congregation members, pastors, district presidents and other church officials. Additional authors of correspondence include: J.A. Aasgaard, president, ELC; P.O. Bersell, president, Augustana Synod; Nils J. Lohre, secretary, Norwegian Lutheran Church in America (NLCA); Hans Gerhard Stub, Hans, president, NLCA. Subject matter of this correspondence includes legal issues involving congregations, property disputes, vacancies in congregations, congregation mergers, congregation withdrawals, problems with called pastor, problems with congregation council and actions taken by it, and concerns of congregation members on issues affecting their congregation as well as the church-at-large. Generally the correspondence is in good condition, but care should be taken with correspondence from 1917-1940 as this paper is becoming more brittle.
